Diving in Belize (30th July to 1st August 2012)

The Belize Barrier Reef is part of the 900 Km Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, that extends from Cancun (Mexico) to Guatemala. It is the second largest coral reef in the world, after Australia´s Great Barrier Reef (where I have started my scuba diving life), so it is the heaven for divers.

The Blue Hole is a large submarine sinkhole, with circular shape (over 300m across) and 124 meters deep.

This site has its fame thanks to Jacques Cousteau, who declared it one of the top ten scuba diving sites in the world.

The advanced divers´ attraction is getting to 40-42 meters deep, while enjoying reef sharks. For non advanced divers, or those who don't feel comfortable, or less adventurers, the maximum deep is 24 meters.

At the same day, we have done three dives: Blue Hole, Half Moon and Aquarium. In those dives, we have seen 4 reef sharks, 5 sea turtles, 4 manta-rays and a lot of colored fishes.

The day before, I have done two more dives: Amber Head and Sandy Slope.

I would recommend Belize Diving Services, located at Caye Caulker, for many reasons: we begin our day with an awesome breakfast before living land; the great and comfortable boat; the equipment; the delicious food at the interval surface and, finally, the friendly and professional staff.

I got to Belize from Guatemala. It is an all day trip: by bus from El Remate to Belize City and by boat from here to Caye Caulker.

Belize is not that cheap spot, specially for backpackers. So it is prudent to organize the dive trips, because the dive centers don´t go to Blue Hole every days (it is quite far).

And for one who wants to visit Belize only for diving, time is money.

Caye Caulker is not the best beach place, but it has a nice reggae atmosphere and it is also nice for relaxing and enjoying some lobsters. If it is in your budget, why not spending more than a few days?

While you get prepared to start a diving trip, Caye Caulker offers you an amazing sunrise.

When you come back from Blue Hole, smiling with heart, you can enjoy a nice sunset.

And if you are a very lucky guy, the full moon is going to be waiting for you, while you enjoy a beer or cocktail.
